Beginning in late 2016 the red pastel drawings were conceived as a long-term studio project. They are inspired by family history, aspirational philosophies and aesthetic theory.
Monochromatic (at times abstract), with a limited palette, medium and forms, outcomes can become infinite. Small works are often executed on office letter head. The drawings integrate red crayon rubbings taken from the interior and exterior facades of my deceased father’s (Henry V. Sanchez, Esq.) law office building. They are emotional responses to architectural space with references to his social-art practice.
In 2015, the L.O.C.C.A.: Law Office Center for Citizenship and Art project was created at the law office situated in Houston’s historic East End neighborhood. L.O.C.C.A.’s socially engaged, place-making mission served as a platform for local artists and social justice activists to collaborate on programs and events about issues confronting Latino/a/x, Hispanic, and Mexican-American community experiences. Due to a variety of economic and personal factors L.O.C.C.A. ceased operating as an art project in 2022.
